Netherlands Prison

We had an amazing opportunity to do a workshop in a prison in the Netherlands. This was not a normal prison, it was a place where kids had the opportunity to have a fresh start and move on from things in their pasts. The young adults that we worked with ranged from ages 15 to 25 and all of them were in this facility for a different reason. Some were there for their own protection, some were there because they didn’t have citizenship documents and some were there because of mistakes they made in the past. At first many of them didn’t want to sing and dance but eventually they warmed up to the idea and by the end almost everyone was participating. It was a very different experience for many of the Young Americans but it was so rewarding for all of us. We really could see a difference in the way the prisoners interacted with us from the first day to the show itself. I think we all realized when it comes down to it kids are kids no matter where you are or what you’re doing. They all have the same insecurities and problems and they all want the same things, to be happy and to feel like they have a place to belong. This was a workshop that the Young Americans on this tour will never forget.
